Your first ride, step by step

Most people who book this ride are complete beginners, and nothing about it assumes you know horses. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you arrive at the ranch to the moment you get your photos.

1

Arrive at the ranch

You meet the guides at Carolina Ranch, in Cala Sapone on the island of Sant’Antioco, in south-west Sardinia. Paperwork and a short briefing come first.

2

Meet your horse

The ranch works mostly with Quarter Horses that are used to first-time riders. You are matched with a horse that suits you.

3

Learn the basics of western riding

The guide shows you how to sit, how to hold the reins with one hand and the few simple cues that western riding uses. The western saddle is deep and stable, which helps if you are nervous.

4

A test ride in the arena

Before going out you ride a few laps inside the ranch, so you feel confident before the path begins.

5

Out onto the coast

The group heads out at a walk through Mediterranean scrub and along the cliffs towards the Arco dei Baci, then climbs back up the headland to the ranch.

6

Your photos

During the ride the ranch takes photos of the best moments. They are included in the price and sent in digital format.

Riders along the cliffs above the sea on the Arco dei Baci ride, Sant'Antioco

The route: cliffs, scrub and a rock arch over the Sardinian sea

Sant’Antioco is a small island joined to the south-west corner of Sardinia by a causeway. Its western side is the wildest part: low cliffs, juniper and lentisk, wind-shaped rocks and almost no buildings.

Depending on the day, the ride passes the Poggio di Mezzaluna viewpoint, the rock formation locals call the Totem and the cliffs of Is Praneddas, before reaching the Arco dei Baci, a natural arch above a small cove. Part of the path follows a stretch of the horse trail of the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, and the area is dotted with archaeological remains.

Nobody is in a hurry. Walking pace means you can actually look around, talk to the guide and take in the sea from the saddle.

Optional add-on · +€20 per person

Before the Saddle

Arrive about an hour before the ride and spend that time with your horse: brushing, cleaning the hooves, saddling up with the guide. It is the best way to understand the animal you are about to ride, and many beginners find it takes away any nerves.

Ask for it when you book the Arco dei Baci ride.
